Drums, Disco, and Pure Joy — The Disco Samba Project at Spennymoor Gala
Spennymoor was alive with rhythm and colour today as the brilliant Disco Samba Project lit up the streets with their unmistakable energy and carnival spirit. Part of the vibrant creative hub that is Jack Drum Arts in Crook, this eclectic street band delivered an unforgettable performance full of pounding samba beats, glittering costumes, and infectious joy.
Photographing them was an absolute treat. From the very first drumbeat, the group radiated a sense of fun and togetherness that instantly drew in the crowd. The performers — dressed in disco-themed t-shirts, sparkly tops, and an impressive variety of wigs and accessories — clearly loved every moment, and that enthusiasm rippled outwards. It wasn’t long before people were dancing along the pavement, clapping in time and smiling from ear to ear.
The Disco Samba Project is more than just a street band; it’s a celebration of community, creativity, and expression. Powered by the inclusive ethos of Jack Drum Arts, they bring people together through rhythm and performance. And it shows — in every confident beat of the drum, every sequin, every painted face.
This was community art at its most vibrant and joyful. The Spennymoor Gala provided the perfect setting for such a performance — a reminder of the power of local events to bring people out, lift spirits, and celebrate the energy that comes when people come together to create something special.
I’m always drawn to colour, energy, and human connection — and this performance had all three in abundance. A real highlight of the summer so far.
