Throttle, Rocks, and Yorkshire Grit — Day Two of the Reeth 3 Day Trial in Swaledale
The drama continued today in Swaledale as riders tackled Day Two of the Reeth 3 Day Trial, one of the standout events in the UK trials calendar. Organised with characteristic precision and passion by Richmond Motor Club, this annual challenge draws riders of all ages and levels into the rugged terrain of the Yorkshire Dales — and today, the going was as tough as ever.
Day Two is often where the fatigue starts to set in, and both riders and machines are pushed a little closer to the edge. But the commitment on show was nothing short of inspiring. From the first section to the last, riders battled their way up mossy banks, between tight trees, across loose rock steps, and through steep gullies, often cheered on by spectators perched on dry stone walls or nestled between bracken and boulders.
There’s a real charm to the Reeth 3 Day — it’s grassroots motorsport at its most authentic. No paddocks, no grandstands, just proper trials riding through a working landscape that demands respect. Today’s route wound through some especially tricky sections, many only accessible thanks to the generosity of local farmers and landowners. It’s a unique collaboration between sport and community that gives the event its soul.
Photographically, it’s a dream — and a challenge. Capturing the moment a rider lifts the front wheel to hop a boulder, the concentration etched into their expression, or the burst of colour from modern race gear set against ancient woodland — it’s what makes covering this event so addictive. The changing light and tricky terrain made for some great contrasts, with plenty of chances to shoot riders mid-move, legs flailing or gritted teeth showing through visors.
It wasn’t just the pros turning heads either — the youth riders, clubmen, and seasoned veterans all brought their A-game. Each section was a mix of nerves, tactics, and raw skill, and you could feel the camaraderie between competitors as they waited for their turn, watched each other’s lines, and shared stories from yesterday’s challenges.
A huge thank you goes again to Richmond Motor Club, the landowners, observers, and volunteers who make this trial possible year after year. Without them, the Reeth 3 Day wouldn’t have its unique character or scale.
One more day to go — and if the last two are anything to go by, we’re in for a cracking finish.
