There is something about early morning light in Swaledale that never quite repeats itself. Even on familiar routes there is always a small shift in colour or mood, a softness in the air that feels new. This morning I set out along the road that climbs towards Fremington Edge, a place I have walked countless times, yet it still manages to offer something unexpected.
The road was damp from the night, the surface dark and cool underfoot. Jasper trotted ahead with that steady confidence he carries on these morning walks, nose low, tail relaxed. The valley was still waking, the sound of the river drifting up in a gentle murmur, the fields holding a pale wash of light that had not yet gathered its strength.
Halfway up the climb, something caught my eye. A small glint on the road, a shimmer that did not belong to stone or water. I slowed, and there it was, stretched across the tarmac with quiet certainty. A slow worm, its scales glowing like old bronze in the soft light. Perfectly still, perfectly calm, as if it had risen from the earth simply to remind me to pause.
There is a particular kind of magic in these encounters. They arrive without ceremony, without noise, and yet they stay with you long after the moment has passed. The slow worm lifted its head slightly, unhurried, aware but not alarmed. For a few seconds we shared the same space, the same morning, the same quiet. Then it slipped back into the grass with a smooth, effortless movement, leaving the road empty once more.
I stood for a while, listening to the valley breathe. The climb ahead waited, the day waited, but that small moment felt like the true beginning. A reminder that even the most familiar paths can offer something rare if you move slowly enough to notice.
Walking on, I carried that stillness with me. The road curved upward, the light strengthened, and the valley opened out behind me. But the memory of that bronze shimmer on the damp road stayed close, a gentle reminder that the landscape is always alive with quiet wonders.
