The Watchers of the Fields
This morning’s walk started off like any other – boots laced, camera slung over my shoulder, and that low early light just beginning to break across the fields. But it didn’t take long before I realised I wasn’t alone.
There’s a quiet kind of theatre that unfolds in the countryside if you stop to pay attention. Not the big, dramatic kind, but the subtle glances and sidelong stares. And today, it felt like I had an audience.
First, a sheep – half-hidden behind a tree, just the edge of its face poking out from the bark like a curious child playing hide and seek. It stood stock still, caught between the decision to step out or stay hidden, ears alert and eyes locked on mine. There was something conspiratorial about it, as if we’d just stumbled into each other’s day and neither of us was quite sure how to react.
A bit further along, I met the cows. One, leaning lazily over a dry stone wall, gave me the kind of slow blink that says, “I’ve seen it all before.” A solid, gentle presence – nose twitching, tags flapping slightly in the breeze. The other stood by a rusted wire fence, its gaze level and still, with that calm confidence only cows seem to carry. No hurry. No worry. Just quietly taking stock of the world – and me.
It’s easy to forget, walking through these landscapes, that we’re always being noticed. Maybe not by people, but by the lives that fill the hills and fields in ways both subtle and constant. The animals know you’re there long before you notice them. They watch you pass. They see you looking.
These small encounters – fleeting glances, moments of connection – are one of my favourite parts of being out in the landscape. The way these creatures carry on with their quiet lives, rooted deeply into the land, always brings a sense of perspective.
So here they are – a few of the faces that made this morning’s walk feel just a little more alive.
