The First Flush of Heather on Harkerside

This afternoon on Harkerside, I spotted something that always lifts my heart—a quiet signal that summer is beginning to lean ever so slightly toward its next chapter. The very first sprigs of heather are starting to bloom.
It’s a subtle thing, really. You have to be looking for it. Among the greens and golds of the hill, just a few tips of that unmistakable purple are beginning to show. They catch the light differently, those tiny bells of colour. They’re the first hints of what will soon become a rolling sea of purple across the moors. But right now, it's just the beginning. Quiet, unhurried, and beautiful in its restraint.
This part of the year always feels like a turning point. The bracken is tall and full now, the grasses bleached and bowing with the heat, and the wildflowers that dominated earlier in the season are starting to retreat. And then, just as the landscape begins to feel like it’s settling into a lull, the heather steps up—bold, fragrant, and always slightly magical.
Photographing heather at this early stage is something I really enjoy. There’s a freshness to it, a tenderness even. The flowers haven’t yet been buffeted by wind or baked by the sun. The bees are starting to find them, though, and you can hear that familiar hum building in the background. Life returning to the moorland in a different rhythm.
What I love most about these first flowers is how they ask you to slow down. It’s easy to walk straight past them if you’re not paying attention. But when you stop, crouch down, and take a closer look, you notice the richness of colour, the texture of the stems, and how delicately each bloom is formed. It’s like nature whispering before it starts to sing.
It won’t be long before Harkerside and the rest of the hillsides are fully transformed. In another couple of weeks, we’ll be into full heather season—the kind of scenes that stop you in your tracks and make you just stand there in awe. But I’ve always had a soft spot for this quiet start. It feels like a secret the moor is only just beginning to tell.
If you're in the area, now's the time to get out for a walk and look closely—you might just spot those first brave blooms yourself.
