A Wonderful Day at Reeth Show 2026
There are some events that perfectly capture the character of a place, and Reeth Show is undoubtedly one of them.
From the moment the gates opened, there was a real sense of excitement around the showfield. The crowds turned out in force, the weather played its part, and the atmosphere throughout the day reflected just how much this annual event means to the people of Swaledale and beyond. Families, farmers, competitors, exhibitors and visitors came together to celebrate rural life in all its forms, creating what can only be described as a hugely successful day.
As a photographer, agricultural shows offer an incredible variety of subjects, and Reeth Show certainly did not disappoint. Everywhere I looked there was something worth photographing. In one corner of the field handlers carefully prepared livestock before judging, while elsewhere visitors admired impressive displays of flowers, vegetables and local produce. The show tents were filled with colour and craftsmanship, showcasing the dedication and talent that goes into every exhibit.
One of the standout additions to this year's programme was the introduction of speed sheep shearing. It was fascinating to watch competitors demonstrate both their skill and speed, transforming what many people might see as a routine farming task into a thrilling spectacle. The crowd gathered in large numbers throughout the competition, cheering on the shearers and appreciating the expertise on display. Judging by the reaction from competitors and spectators alike, it proved to be a tremendous success and one of the most entertaining attractions of the day.
Elsewhere, the traditional livestock classes attracted strong entries, with sheep and cattle presented to an exceptionally high standard. Watching generations of farming families taking part highlighted the enduring importance of agriculture to the Yorkshire Dales and the pride that local people take in their stock.
Away from the livestock rings, the produce and flower sections provided a wonderful contrast. Bright blooms, carefully cultivated vegetables and beautifully presented entries drew plenty of admiration from visitors. These displays are often quieter parts of the show, but they reveal just as much dedication, skill and passion as any of the more competitive events.
The sporting side of the day was equally impressive. The fell race brought energy and drama as runners charged across the hillside, testing themselves against both terrain and fellow competitors. Their determination and athleticism made for some fantastic photographic opportunities, capturing the effort and commitment that define this uniquely Dales tradition.
Adding another layer of excitement was the bike display team, whose gravity defying tricks drew regular crowds throughout the afternoon. Their performances brought gasps and applause from spectators and provided a striking modern element within a show that proudly celebrates both heritage and contemporary rural life.
What makes Reeth Show special is not simply the range of attractions on offer. It is the people. Whether exhibitors chatting with visitors, volunteers keeping everything running smoothly, competitors striving for success or families enjoying a day out together, there is a strong sense of community at the heart of the event. It is a gathering that brings people together and celebrates everything that makes the Yorkshire Dales such a special place.
These photographs represent only a very small selection of the images I captured throughout the day, but they tell the story of an event full of colour, tradition, competition and enjoyment. Reeth Show once again demonstrated why it remains one of the highlights of the local calendar, and everyone involved deserves enormous credit for delivering such a memorable occasion.
